TRUIST POINT
HOME OF THE ROCKERS

Review from July 27, 2019
High Point Rockers vs. Sugar Land Skeeters
The New Alternative
By: Matthew Preslar

Beginning play in 2019 in an already crowded market are the High Point Rockers. High Point is a small city very near what is called the Triad area of North Carolina. Yes, I know TRIAD means three. However, in the greater Triad area there are affiliated minor league teams in Durham, just east of Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and Burlington. All of these teams are just out of limited mileage not to infringe on each other’s market per (MLB) affiliated professional restrictions.

Per affiliated rules, a team in High Point can’t exist. It’s too close to a couple of these markets. Therefore, ownership knew their only option was to be an expansion team in the Atlantic League: a league that has played traditionally in the Northeast with franchises opening closing in bunches along the way.

I’m a hardcore baseball fan and I love new stadiums. If the trip can be done in a day I will see that stadium in its Inaugural Season. I may represent 10% of the fan base.  However, I know I’m not the 90% of the population needed for ownership to be profitable. Compared to their close neighbors, especially in Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Burlington, the Rockers need to promote themselves as THE NEW ALTERNATIVE.

With home about two hours away from High Point, I’m not familiar with Rockers advertising in local newspapers or television. I do follow them on IG. Most notable posts are usually posting the score of that night’s game. In whatever platforms available to them I would like to list ways I feel like they could brand as THE NEW ALTERNATIVE.
  • Brand new BB&T Point ballpark
  • Best ticket prices in baseball, a family of four can park and get in for $23
  • 100% turf field, bright and vibrant
  • Higher level players, many with MLB experience and many from the state
  • More patriotic baseballs with BLUE and RED seams. (A buddy of mine was a fill in umpire there one night and grabbed me a non game used baseball!)
  • Room to relax with less vendors crowding the walkways
  • An array of experimental and ALTERNATIVE rules in partnership with Major League Baseball.
  • Most notable for the fan experience: no trips to the mound other than pitching             changes and less time between innings, meant to increase pace of play
  • Batters CAN STEAL FIRST on any bouncing pitch
  • Balls and strikes called by an automated system and relayed to plate umpire             through and ear piece

My advice to High Point? Promote the pricing, promote the players, promote crazy new rules, promote that you are an outside the box operation not confounded to the norm.  The main thing I want to see is that the High Point Rockers just promote.

We went to BB&T Point not intending to evaluate the park. Afterward, though, we decided we were curious how they would organically score on our criteria amongst their MiLB neighbors. Some rare weekends, the Rockers may be one of six baseball choices in about an hour of each other. I hope they are doing enough to make sure that YOU know they are worth the experience!

OUR RATING:
45 / 50

HOME OF THE:
HIGH POINT ROCKERS

MLB AFFILIATION:
NONE - INDEPENDENT

BUILT: 2019
CAPACITY: 5,000
LEAGUE: ALPB (ATLANTIC LEAGUE OF PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL)
DIVISION: LIBERTY

TICKET VALUE 10/10

  • $5 GA, $12 for most seats down baselines, pricing is even below tier for nearby clubs playing in Low A/Advanced A ball
  • New field is 100% turf, a novelty and special attraction not common in the Southeast
  • Relative to ticket price, exceptional quality of player. (Many of these players have Major League experience, most were AA or above).
  • Team should advertise having better players than their local competitors like Greensboro and Winston-Salem (lower level minor league)
  • We paid for a seat but crowd was scarce enough we went a section down and sat front row.

CONCESSIONS  8/10

  • Fairly standard concession selection
  • $9 chicken or burger baskets
  • $5 souvenir soda
  • Craft beer bar in main team store seemed odd
  • Stands weren’t crowded even for a Saturday and stadium wasn’t over run with retail space (food, shops) Nice change to not be overwhelmed by commercialism

FAMILY FRIENDLINESS  5/5

  • Very family friendly ticket prices, lower than any of the several nearby minor league teams and the cheapest ticket prices we’ve seen in professional baseball above Rookie ball in East Tennessee
  • Large play area down left field line

ATMOSPHERE  9/10

  • Very low key environment... not really sure the amount of time and money allotted for promotions (social or otherwise)
  • Country music mostly from the 90’s era playing in the stadium pregame
  • Team employees dressed in Western style outfits complete with cowboy hats
  • Design and decor meant to look blue collar, like textile factory workers which was big industry in the area and what High Point is known for across the state
  • First year stadium; all aspects of the facility were neat and clean
  • As an umpire I was interested in seeing the few gimmick rules in the Atlantic League (experimenting in partnership with MLB... more information in summary)
  • Excited as a fan to see the caliber of players, many with MLB experience at a much lower price point... many players from NC elect to sign with High Point as opposed to being assigned to a minor league team somewhere across the country through traditional affiliated baseball
  • Noticed hooks under the standing room bars to hang your bags - BRILLIANT! And only place we've seen feature this so far.

CHARACTER  8/10

  • Beautiful new stadium- lots of brick
  • Raised staircase entrance
  • Field is completely turf and it seemed to play very fast, even bouncy at times... adding to the allure of being an alternative product to traditional minor league baseball.
  • Hats and uniforms manufactured by local company OT Sports... local businesses working together and promoting one another
  • Team store minimal in options and also sold beer...not showing their brand
  • Full 360 walkable concourse

PARKING  5/5

  • $3 paved lot just across side street from ticket window
  • Very close to main entrance
